Salt Water Taffy originated in Atlantic City in the 1880s. Although their name might imply so, these taffies have never been created by employing a generous amount of sea water. Legend has it the candy earned this moniker by accident — one night an enormous wave sprayed sea foam all over a young merchants establishment and soaked his stock of candy. The next morning, when a customer asked for some taffy, he wittily asked if she desired “salt water taffy” instead. And the name stuck!

Shortly after salt water taffys invention, Joseph Fralinger opened a retail store on the Atlantic Boardwalk and perfected the formula for the sweet, chewy candy. He decided that all tourists should return home with a taste of the treat, so he began packaging one pound oyster boxes full of the confection to send home with visitors, essentially creating the first “Atlantic City Souvenir” and making salt water taffy a household name! Creamy taste and smoothness have been the difference that has made Fralinger’s the first choice in taffy for over 100 years.
